Our aim at Pirton Hill, is for every child to enjoy and understand Maths. This will develop confident mathematicians, able to understand numbers, calculate fluently and apply skills in a wide variety of different situations. We strive to achieve this through a broad and balanced Maths Curriculum which meets the requirements of the 2014 National Curriculum for Maths.
Learning Sequence
At Pirton Hill, we believe that children not only need to learn a wide range of Maths skills, they also need to master these skills. In order to achieve this, skills are taught in a three step approach where the children experience Maths practically before moving to pictorial and written formats.
For example: Jack has 3 cars and Sam has 1 car. How many cars do they have altogether?

The delivery of Maths at Pirton Hill is supported by the use of White Rose Maths. This is a scheme influenced, inspired and informed by the work of leading maths researchers and practitioners across the world. White Rose Maths brings together a team of highly experienced and passionate maths teaching experts to support schools. The scheme is built around the need for children to master skills and knowledge. It has been written with 5 key principles in mind to ensure all children have access to high quality teaching and learning. These principles are:
These are principles by which we plan our sequences of lessons, keeping at the core the idea that all children are capable of achieving if the right doors are opened.
What will the children be taught in each year group?
The White Rose scheme of learning is split into sequential units across the year, each with a high emphasis on the teaching and learning of number, forming the basis for all other areas of Maths.

Numbots and Times Tables Rockstars
To further support learning and automatic recall of number facts we provide the opportunity to all learners from Reception to Year 6 to play Numbots and Times Tables Rockstars in school and at home.
Frequent practice is essential to develop and embed these skills - little and often is the key.
Numbots is primarily aimed at Reception and KS1 pupils, supporting development of number bonds, addition and subtraction knowledge.
Times Tables Rockstars is primarily aimed at KS2 pupils to develop automatic recall of multiplication and division facts.
